How to Print Black and White on Epson

EPSON How to print in black when color ink is out?

I have a friend with a newer Epson printer. I don't know the model number but it is a lower end printer. Recently his printer stopped printing because the color cartridge ran out of ink. Since he doesn't care about printing in color, he changed the setting to "Black" printing mode but it seems the machine won't print in any mode if either cartridge is out of ink. He knows the black ink cartridge is good (because he just replaced it) and thinks it's a rip off to have to buy a new color cartridge when he just wants to print in black. Is there any way around this, to get the printer to print in black again without buying a new color cartridge?
Thanks in advance for any help!

I know, I'll never buy an epson again. I'll
probably put a website on my server and call
epson sucks. I bought an epson c82. I've had it
about 3 months. It says it is out of yellow ink.
I replaced it with a new epson ink cartridge,
still the same thing. I thought maybe it was a
bad cartidge. I bought another set of ink cartridges.
Still the same thing. I can't even print black. If
they can't figure a way around this issue, I'll
sure do my part to let people know what I think about
them!

I called Epson's corporate office 1-562-276-1311 and left my complaint with them about this issue. I urge everyone to call them and register their complaint.

I've had the same problem as Rod's friend. Just to be clear, are you saying that there is no way to print a document using the black ink cartridge ONLY? In order to print something black you have to mix color in with it??

I've set all of my options to print in black & white, yet my color cartridge ran out before my black one did!! Now I can't print anything! Is there anyway around this? I for one cannot afford to piss away money on printer cartridges every month or so.

CALGON TAKE ME AWAY!

I just bought my first black refill for my Photo 820 then I came here to find out why my printer still won't print. IT'S A 70 DOLLAR PRINTER AND A 50 DOLLAR REFILL. I'll never buy an Epson product again let alone an ink jet printer (NOBODY PRINTS IN COLOR). It's a friggin ink racket. I'm going back to laserjets.

I bought this printer because I had a Cannon in the past with individual color ink cartridges. My grandchildren put part of an orange in it and ruined it.(Children do a lot of weird things) Why buy one that has one refill with all the colors in one cartridge. I am royally ticked off about this issue. I can afford the ink but will just go out and find a different printer and give this one to goodwill. You can bet the next one I get will not be Epson! What happened to recycling to help the earth? They used to tar and feather people....better than a firing squad. Epson get your head out of your rear end!

Yep - I'm joining the "send Epson printers to Hell" party!
There is no valid reason for a printer to be designed in such a way that I need to replace my Cyan cartridge just to print in black. It's a scam to force people into repeatedly putting $60 ink cartridges into $50 printers. Pure scam.
Don't bother with an explanation - I'm dropping the printer (along with the brand new black ink) off at Salvation Army tomorrow morning and if I can't find a replacement that will allow printing with just black then I will be going without a printer. After all, with "genuine" Epson ink cartridges that I use maybe once every 3 or 4 months at most I am already out of 1 colour. What was there, like a single bloody drop of ink in them for the money I paid?
Scam - pure and simple. I'm all done with it.

This is one of the biggest jokes in the wide world of capitalism's jokes on consumers. I have THREE out of FOUR of my cartridges full, with just CYAN down to 0. It is highly amusing to me that when the BLACK cartridge is DOWN the printer miraculously finds a way to print in BLACK by combining COLORS. But when I just want to print in BLACK with a BLACK cartridge, suddenly the printer ain't so clever no more. SCAM.

I joined the club of F Epson. I never ever print foto's but every couple of months my PhotoBlack (cartridge PBK) runs out (why?).

Mind you, this is not the regular black (BK Cartridge). It's runnig out also much faster then on my previous HP. But, at least I'm using that toner.

And the same as with the color cardridges, no printing allowed. :-S

I accepted the outdated and totaly not user friendly software but this is really irritating. Do not buy Epson !

Damn you Epson!! Black ink is full, need to print out an Insurance card to keep in my car and your stupid printer will not let me do it. I MUST replace the red & blue cartridges in order to print a normal black and white page...what kind of BS is this? If I get pulled over by the cops and tell them your sorry excuse for a printer wouldn't let me print the damn card, they are not going to care and I end up with a ticket. You lost me as a customer for good. I will also tell my family, friends and anybody else who listens not to buy your products either.

Epson had best release a patch for my wf--4640. I rarely print color but somehow cyan is out and I can't print invoices. I sell a 100 printers a month . Guess which brand misses out on sales from now on. I am not selling a product I have no faith in. I was talked into trying this one instead of a laser . I've had trouble ever since. Business quality. EPSON printers are a fucking scam. Rat bastards wont let me print my "BLACK" document because I ran out of "BLUE" ink. Their stupid print dialog doesn't even let you close the program. you have to use task manager to force quit(mean while "BUY INK" button just sits in your face. All they are trying to do is force you to buy more of their ink. It's all a scam. I rarely write customer complaints but shit like this really pisses me off. Trying to FORCE me to do something. Wow, I've been soon disappointed with my Epson XP-400 and pretty much unable to use it since I first bought it. It was on sale, but there are no savings here. I have wasted money on more ink only to still not have print capability. The only thing worth buying this product is reading the reviews! I am a AD full-time military member and a full time student. I have NO freaking time to waste, but the amount of time I have wasted trying to get this product to work correctly has been enormous!!! In the trash it goes so that I do not put anyone else through this headache!

I agree with everyone here, 100%. I have never in my life owned, or even used a printer, that would not print in black and white (without the color cartridges being affected). That's not even what upsets me the most. It's the fact that the black, red, and yellow cartridges are full. As with a lot of others here, the Cyan is the only one that is out. I almost always print in black and white. CYAN does not need to be used with the black ink. It's a complete joke. Good job, Epson, for fooling people into buying your garbage products. And you can save that whole "if you don't use your printer, your ink dries up", blah blah blah excuses. I was using it very frequently (like I stated, mostly in black ink), and once again, Cyan is the only one that is "empty". I know it isn't dry. I took it out and gently pressed the head against a piece of paper, and sure enough, there's a nice, wet, blob of blue. I normally don't test cartridges in that way, I just wanted to see if it was actually dry/empty. This has happened several times before, as well. Just the Cyan. It's always the Cyan. In between the documents I have to print, I do (or used to) print photos on the 4x6 photo paper. Granted, the photos looked really nice for the most part, one or two thrown in should not drain the color cartridges, especially not just that one specifically. I never write reviews, complaints, or otherwise, but I'm beyond pissed off with this product. I, like many others, would love your printers (or printer combos), if you didn't force people to buy ink that is; 1) Not necessary and 2) Shouldn't be empty or dry in the first place. My Mom bought this printer combo a couple years ago. I wish I would have known that the problem with the ink that happened shortly after she got it, was going to be an endless waste of money. You suck, Epson. Maybe you should have tried to produce quality products, without ripping everyone off, to keep/expand your customer base. Word of mouth.. I will definitely let everyone I know to stay clear of Epson products.

** I'm aware this is not Epson's site. Also, that it's an old thread. I just needed to rant, since others here understand my frustration.**

Please do not donate this crap to Salvation Army etc. as the poor purchaser is probably less able to afford the fraud than we. Instead I intend to post hurling my Epson WF2540 into a dumpster from the third floor attic window on youtube. After that perhaps I will print up (on my new laser printer) some permanent stick labels that say "check reviews before you buy." I believe Epson is involved in conscious consumer fraud here so even if the label said "not a real printer:ink fraud generator" they couldn't possibly prosecute because it is true. They owe us all a complete refund on product purchase and ink purchases.

I have read a number of complaints about various models of Epson printers and the one problem they seem to have in common is being unable to print a black and white document if one of the colours is empty. This is so unjust.

If you continue to read on, you will see most have this problem but one thing you might not have noticed is the fact the empty colour is nearly always CYAN (blue)! Is this a Epson conspiracy to make this happen or is blue used more frequently as a mixing colour?

I am particularly angry at the moment as I have a number of issues on PayPal (involving my Bank Account and Debit Card linked to PayPal and an insufficient number of refunds to my account) and I desperately needed to print the Activity details out for my bank's benefit so they can investigate the matter further. But thanks to Epson and their stupid technological ideas where you can't print a colour even if you have a full cartridge, I cannot print a very important number of documents!

I do not have a complaint over the cost of the cartridges (I buy economical versions on eBay) and even the cost of their machines are competitive but having to order ink more than regularly is quite honestly a REAL PAIN IN THE ARSE!!!

Martin

Might as well have no BK, Y, or M! Epson is a piece of crap. Ive been up for a good damn while 'cleaning the heads' or 'checking the nozzles' in hopes that I can print regular old Black. I thought changing the font to a darker blue/red. or green might help but no. Might as well not be able to print a god damn thing. Oh wait might as well throw this price of crap away right in the trash or through the Epson Office building window. Right where it belongs. The ammount of money its takes them to replace that glass window would be all the money I ever had to spend on their god damn ink when my "Cyan" is too low. They can suck my balls.

I have the same problem - I put in a brand new black cartridge into an Epson XP-410 printer, and after 4 pages I could no longer print anything because the BLUE ink ran out. But what is EVEN WORSE is that as these 4 pages were printing, I had the printer open and was watching the print heads - and even though it was an all text document (my resume), for EVERY line I watched as it printed blue first, and then black, over the blue ink. What is the point of this??? My document was set for BLACK ink. What purpose could there possibly be for printing blue first, and then black over it? The only possible reason I could think of is to make the blue ink run out even faster, and then force the printer to stop working becuase one ink cartridge is out. So this is ANOTHER LEVEL of the Epson SCAM!! I can't believe they actually design and program their printers like this. Unbelievable! Add me to the list of people here will NEVER BUY EPSON again. And I will warn others.

Is it possible to use all black carts to replace the color carts in order to enforce black ink only printing? The carts come in two sizes so they should fit but I don't know if this will work. Does anyone else know? Seems that if you use all black ink carts and use black-only settings in the application so that it would not use much from the color side, this would greatly extend the life of black-ink printing without having to replace the color side for a very long time. Anyone tried this? Please let me know if it works.

Epson xp 520 used a little bit , then it starts

says the big black ink cartridge is out ... replaced

Print two pieces say other ink is out. What wait I did not use it enough for ink to be out .

So it has come to my conclusion that epson does not put full cartridges in the printer in the beginning when you buy it.

Sorry epson , was going to give this to my kid and buy another new model . Don't see that happening . You lost this customer. Thank you . Sincerely Mr RDG

I know what you mean. This morning I was printing some stuff out for university, the color ran out so it gave me the option of just using black ink until that ran out too. I replaced the black cartridge as that is all I needed (it's just b/w documents) and all I can afford but it won't let me print out the last page. Ironically the page I need to print out the most is the declaration so I can start getting some kind of income.

Hope that helps you all out.

The black ink dried up in my epson and I couldn't print black text. I did what epson said and used the automatic cleaning system on the printer. But it used up all the colour ink in the cleaning process, it has to inject ink out of cartriges to clean them but you can't just clean the black ink it cleans the blue, yellow and magenta heads as well. So now it won't print and I can't jsut run out and get 3 new colour cartridges especially when I just wantto print in black and white.

And not only that I spend a couple of days trying to diagnose the problem in the first place. A printer should be low tech in this day and age but here is this massive company and they can't even make a printer.

Buy an Epson ink cartridge chip re-setter and a cheap refill kit. Put a hole in the top of the ink cartridge and insert the replacement ink. Cover the hole with tape then reset the chip on the cartridge using the tool. If all works out you should be able to print pretty cheap

There are youtube videos on this and the reset tool is around $15.00

It is a ink scam. What is the point of having individual cartridges if you can't print without one of the colors. I am low or out of the colors and have a full black cartridge (and only want to print black) but it won't let me due to the low color ink (which shouldn't be low or out as I hardly ever print with color). They have no common sense? Am I missing something? Dumbest thing I ever heard. No matter what setting you use, it sucks the ink badly... Very disappointed. Will never buy again. By the way, this is my second Epson printer as the other one took a crap (thought it was a fluke) but the ink cartridges are not interchangeable either so I am stuck with a bunch of unopened ink from the other one that I'm just out all of that money... Because of course you can't find the same model as before. Both printers were Epson Workforce All in one. Wasn't even used very much. Either one.... Never Again....

I bought an XP-820 Expression Premium to replace an old, but reliable, Lexmark LaserJet at home, because I wanted something smaller and more compact in my home office. Similar to others here, I need to print important documents urgently, and can not print in black and white, because Cyan is empty!? WTF Epson? First Epson I've ever owned, and last Epson I'll ever own. What a ridiculous product. Not that it particularly matters, but I'm the Founder and Chairman of a publicly listed company with 250 employees and a $400m market cap. I'm also a director of numerous other private venture-backed companies - with an aggregate value of around $1b. First item on the agenda for my Board meetings tomorrow (for which I am unable to print the Board papers) will be ensuring none of my companies ever buy an Epson product again. EVER.

I just spent over an hour with an idiot Epson tech person in India, he kept repeating what I was saying to suggest he could not understand me [I'm easy to understand, I used to be a radio announcer] and he never would answer my question about how to print in black without replacing the blue cart. YOU CAN'T. Seems the black isn't really black ink, and it requires the blue ink to actually make it black. Now here is the idiocy of it all: The black ink cart is twice the size of the other 3 cartridges. But because it needs the blue ink to produce a "true" black ink, the printer goes thru 2 blue ink carts for every larger black cart. AND YOU CAN'T JUST BUY A BLUE CART at most local suppliers. So I have multiple red & yellow carts, all brand new.

At least it still will work when the cart is replaced, unlike the Horrid HP printer I once had [was replaced 3 times under warranty, the 3rd one lasted only 4 months before dying, but HP said all 3 of them used up the 12 month warranty time frame!]

Moral of the store: Don't buy ANYTHING FROM HP, and don't buy an Epson printer. Perhaps Jeff Rossen from NBC "Ripoff Report" should do a story on it!

Same issue with Epson WF2540. I rarely print color, and I can't think of a time when I absolutely had to. All of my colors are full but Cyan is empty. Going to buy a Cyan (generic ink- inkfarm for $6.00). If that doesn't work, this Epson piece of *&%%%! is going to the curb. Maybe the garbage man can fix it. Then I'm going to buy an HP laser printer and print in black and white for the rest of my life!

The first printer i ever bought was an EPSUCK back in the day, I HATED IT bc it didnt have a straight paper feed always jammed & shook and itas noisy as crap. I SWORE ID NEVER BUY ANOTHER and i havent. ONLY HP!!! My HP ran out of ink the same time a friends step mother passed away. Among the MANY items she'd recently bought was a BRAND NEW NEVER OPENED EPSUCK XP-430. My friend gave it to me. ITS ALREADY OUT OF CYAN and WONT PRINT BLACK. THIS JUST SHOWS THAT IN THE LAST 15 YEARS NOTHINGS CHANGED EPSON... STILL SUCKS !*!*!*!*!*!*!*!*! SCAMMING PPL OUT OF $$ RIPOFF ARTISTS. I BELIEVE THERE WAS A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT OVER THIS VERY THING. PRINTERS WARNING USERS THAT THEY'RE OUT OF INK (TONER CARTRIDGES) WHEN THEYRE REALLY STILL 1/2 WAY FULL TO GET PEOPLE TO SPEND MONEY SOONER THAN THEY HAVE TO.

@*@*@*@*@ HEY GUYS .... ON LASER PRINTERS (not sure if all) THERE IS A LITTLE WINDOW ON THE SIDE OF THE TONER CART THAT YOU CAN PLACE A PIECE OF ELEC TAP OVER AND IT PREVENTS THE SENSOR FROM READING THE INK LEVEL. which means you can use all the ink til its bone dry w/o any of this bullshit. i know i know who has a laser printer? i do. tho it belongs to my employer. i still do the tape thing!!

Im making you a promise EPSON. I promise NEVER to buy your products again. How bou dah? Liz

I have a wf 2540 that has sucked up so much ink, I am sick of replacing the cartridges, the last time I replaced all the cartridges and just printed about 10 copies within a month and it ran out of ink, so I went back to Staples where I buy the ink and they said if you don't use it everyday the ink dries out.

Never before in my life have I had a problem with a printer being unable to print in black or grayscale or monochrome, (call it what you like!), when a colour cartridge runs out of ink. Epsom just want to sell individual cartridges at £9.99 (UK) and make massive profits. Unfortunately for them, the people who have been caught in this devious trap will not be purchasing another Epsom product. In the long term Epsom will lose a share of the market to more respectful and trustworthy manufacturers.

Why are the brain dead employees of Epsom, who have developed this cheating way of manufacturing their printer, not been held to account? Maybe it stems from top management all the way down. Just a horrible Company!!!

FU Epson. It's my printer and if I want to print in black when Cyan has run out, that's my effing choice, not Epson's. Never again. It's going on ebay and I'm going back to HP. Bastards.

I bought an Epson XP 820 printer, and after a short time, realized, like everyone here, that I got scammed. I only print in black, and after just a few prints, I start getting a warning that ink is low in all cartridges. A display shows all the color ones are just about empty. They are really still full. Then of course the printer will no longer print in black. The first time, out of desperation, I put all new colors back in, just so I could use the damn black printer. When that became low, I replaced the black, and I swear, shortly after, the bastard started with the low color ink warning again. I am throwing this money robbing piece of shit away, and buying a black only laser printer. The HP ones in my library work beautiful. This was an absolute scam by EPSON. Am so pissed.

For all those out there trying to figure out how to print only B&W when one of your color cartridges is spent, please know that you CANNOT, at least not with Epson printers. It's a technical issue and the user cannot go around it. I contacted Epson's customer support and after some frustration and the same inane canned replies they usually send out, someone was honest enough to tell me so:

"In response to your inquiry, to keep the print head clear and ready to print, the printer uses a small amount of ink from all the cartridges whenever it prints. Even if you select Black/Grayscale, some color ink is still being used. Epson printers contain a permanent print head that needs to be charged with all colors to work. Even when users are printing black text only, a small amount of color ink is used to keep the print head charged. The print head needs to be kept charged to prevent air bubbles from entering. Air bubbles can damage the print head. Therefore, once one of the cartridges is expended, the printer signals you to replace the cartridge in order for printing to continue."

So, there you go.

As a printer manufacturer (RICOH rep) once told me, in full honesty and bluntly, (and he said this applies to all printer manufacturers, printers and ink,) "We could offer users the printers for free if they committed to buy our ink; that's how we rip users off and profit in this business."

Indeed! (And he was speaking of all sorts of printers, including high-end ones (my company was plunking down $10,000+ for a large format printer!)

I was considering purchasing a Epson SureColor P5000 Designer Edition 17" Wide-Format Inkjet Printer... I doubt I will ever give Epson one more dime of my hard earned cash from now on --- but at least someone was honest enough to explain why the cartridges, all of them, must have some ink in them.

signed, a very, very unsatisfied Epson user.

PS. By the way, my company did buy that RICOH (laser jet) printer, and after a couple of years, problems started and they could NEVER fix it and get the color and printing back to what it used to be.

My suggestion: Printers such as the Epson WF-2540 cost under $90. A full set of 200XL original Epson cartridges costs $80+... Buy the cheapest ink you can find and when the printer gives up the ghost, replace it with another one. If you print a lot of stuff, you will end up spending thousands of dollars on original ink for a crappy printer with crappy technology that frustrates you to death!

Want to print only B&W docs? Get a laserjet.

Hope this helps someone.

Best to you all!

John

YES! EPSON SUCKS. I am throwing out a practically new printer because every few weeks I can't print due to notifications of buying colored ink. I don't even use color ink! And yet the cartridges are supposedly empty. EPSON SUCKS! DO NOT BUY EPSON PRINTERS

0

The actual reason is because Epson likes money, and they like it a lot. With every black and white print, they mix in some color from ur color cartridges so that ur cartridges run out faster. If there is no ink left in the color cartridges, then they can't mix in color with ur black and white prints which means less money for Epson. And of course because Epson doesn't care about it's customers at all, they do this, and make it so that there is nothing any of us can do about it.

I'm honestly so pissed right now. Screw Epson and their ways of marketing. I have a school project due in an hour and I CANNOT PRINT IT. It's all black and white but apparently to Epson logic i need Magenta ink for a blank and white paper. I am honestly so so so disappointed in Epson and I wish it can go bankrupt. Good thing I found a friend that can print for me but still, this is the last Epson product I will ever buy. It is so unreliable and I cannot even describe how much I was hyperventilating earlier. I can't even start to describe the ridiculous amounts of money the cartridge costs. $60 cartridges for a $40 printer. Enough said. And I cannot even PRINT IF ONE SINGLE COLOR is empty. What is the logic in this? There is none. Epson is just another crappy company that is probably going bankrupt and wants to fish money from consumers.

I needed to print today, so; I go for the cheap fix first and get past being pissed off: so go to Office Max or Staples or wherever and get a cheap refill of yellow. Put it in; press Print. Set to print in black; leave it there.

I have an Epson XP-810. Really liked the printer until I started to realize that it runs out of ink pretty quickly and I had the same problem many of you had which is it won't let me print in black only if any of my colors are out. I've had it for a few years and just tolerated it. But now I am tired of tolerating the problem because it is inconvenient to need to print something in black when I have plenty of black ink and it won't let me since the yellow is out. So, this is terrible customer service. If your product is good, no trickery needs to be involved to keep a customer loyal.

I have two Epsons. One I love and one I hate. The one I hate is a WF-2530. It has tiny cartridges that run out quickly and print heads that clog up easily. If one color is out, it stops printing altogether. STUPID!!! Epson makes it seem as if you can still print in black and white when one of the colors is empty, but if you can, I haven't figured it out.

The Epson I love is an ECO-Tank. It is over a year old and the ink is only about half used up. And when I do refill, the ink is cheap and lasts forever. My only regret is that I didn't get the document feeder on the ECO-Tank. However, the ECO-Tank is not for everyone. If you have to move your printer be careful, as the ink may leak out if tilted.

We live in a time of technology and artificial intelligence. I know that in the state of Colorado, they built a Lamborghini using a laser printer. It was transported using this resource https://junkcarsus.com/ from Colorado to Las Vegas in 2 days. I know that this resource is used to transport old cars. This is a good business.

Even you print only B&W, you still need all cartridges / inks at positive levels. Otherwise, the printer won't print. That how it is and always has been

Rod: As an "Epson Authorized Service Dealer", there's only so much information and help that I can legally give. An Epson Printer [Ink Jet Style] has to have two good ink cartridges in it to be able to print. If the red ink light is on solid, then the printer will not allow printing at all. Even if you reset the color cartridge to fool the printer, you would just be causing more problems in the near future. If you were to reset the old color cartridge, the printer would assume you put in a new cartridge and reset the internal ink counter. The printer would not know when the color ran out completely, thinking it still had lots of ink left. Air would get into the printhead nozzles, causing them to dry out and clog. Its possible that you could not successfully get those color nozzles to reopen again. You cannot just turn off the color ink system, to be able to only use the black. Remember that everytime you do a printing job or perform a printhead cleaning cycle, ink is being used up. If the ink in the color nozzle just set there all the time, while you were just printing in black, the ink inside the printhead nozzles would eventually go bad, then dry out and clog...Denny Conway

Kristina: First thing is that I'm sorry that I could not reply until now. I was off work from 6/26 until 7/2, while I moved my parents approximatly 300 miles, to live with my wife and I. There was of course, a lot of work that came in while I was gone, so I had to catch up on customers printers and equipment, before I could once again help out. I only help on the "printer repair site" when I have the free time. As I work for a company, my job has to come first...You don't have to use your color cartridge, but your printer has to have a good color cartridge installed to be able to even print in black. Once the solid red color light/LED comes on, it locks out the printers operation, until the cartridge has been replaced. There is no way around the solid ink light, to be able to just print in the remaining black ink, that I know of...AGAIN: Even if you reset the color cartridge to fool the printer, you would just be causing more problems in the near future. If you were to reset the old color cartridge, the printer would assume you put in a new cartridge and reset the internal ink counter. The printer would not know when the color ran out completely, thinking it still had lots of ink left. Air would get into the printhead nozzles, causing them to dry out and clog. John: If your printer is only three months old, it is still under warranty and Epson will send you a replacement printer. Just call the "Epson Customer Relations Department" at 1-562-276-1311 and they will create a warranty claim for you and a WHOLE UNIT EXCHANGE will take place. They will send you a replacement printer, along with a return shipping label, to send back the defective printer...Good Luck! Denny Conway
